The Gloucester Township Police Department was dispatched to 4 Edinburgh Road in the Blackwood section of Gloucester Township just before 3:40 p.m., police said.
Upon arrival, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the home. The resident was not home at the time of the fire, and no residents were injured as a result of the fire.
Gloucester Township Fire Departments from Blackwood, Chews Landing, Blenheim, Lambs Terrace, and Erial along with the Pine Hill Fire Department and Deptford Fire Department arrived and were able to place the fire under control. Inspira BLS and Virtua ALS also assisted.
The home was occupied by the sole owner, who was displaced and will be staying with family, police said. Surrounding streets in the Chestnut Glen neighborhood were closed for several hours during the incident. One firefighter from Pine Hill was transported by Inspira BLS to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
At this time the fire does not appear to be suspicious and will remain under investigation by the Fire Marshal from the Blackwood Fire Department Station 84.
"This is a reminder to check you fire suppression systems to include alerts and audible alarm systems to ensure they are operational," police said. "Smoke alarms are a key part of any fire escape plan. When there is smoke, there is fire which can spread quickly. Working smoke alarms give you early warning, so you can get outside quickly."
